Honourable senators, let us examine what we have done here in the Senate. We delegated the examination of Senators Duffy, Brazeau and Wallin’s claims to the Internal Economy Committee. After deliberations, they asked, on our behalf, for the three senators to pay the Senate sums of money and they referred this matter to the RCMP. This, as we all know, is a very serious matter. The RCMP is taking this investigation very seriously.
Honourable senators, it is a great privilege for me to pay tribute to a passionate defender of minority rights, a kind and gentle man, and an outstanding parliamentarian: Senator Pierre De Bané.
I will do my best to deliver a worthy tribute in French this afternoon. As you know, when I first arrived in the Senate, I did not speak French well. Through your encouragement and inspiration, I am proud to recognize you in the language of Molière.
Honourable senators, on Friday, June 7, I had the privilege of participating in the Senate’s annual Staff Recognition Awards ceremony. I joined Senator Cowan, Senator Tkachuk and several other honourable senators in celebrating the hard work and accomplishments of the remarkable people who help us to serve Canadians. The ceremony, organized through the Senate Human Resources Directorate and led by Reina Bernier, recognizes the outstanding achievements and contributions made by Senate employees throughout the year.
